Traction Control Banned in F1... Again.

No wonder Schummacher retired! He couldn't win without it...

Traction control banned from 2008

Traction control has been banned from Formula One from the start of next year in a move supported by all teams and rubber-stamped by the FIA.

A meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council earlier this week approved a number of changes to the 2008 F1 Technical Regulations - the most significant of which appears to be a complete ban on traction control.

Article 9.3 of the newly amended rules states: "No car may be equipped with a system or device which is capable of preventing the driven wheels from spinning under power or of compensating for excessive throttle demand by the driver.

"Any device or system which notifies the driver of the onset of wheel spin is not permitted."

Traction control returned to F1 in 2001 following years of suspicion in the sport that some teams were running clever engine management systems to get around a ban that existed at the time.

It was felt that with it was virtually impossible to guarantee that teams were not running such systems, so the teams agreed the only way forward was to free up the regulations.

However, the move to a standard ECU in 2008 means that it will be easier for the FIA to police engine management systems – and it is believed that this has been the catalyst for engineering such a major rule change.

GM denies V12 Cadillac super sedan rumors

cadillac-sixteen.jpg

Last week, a report by AutoWeek magazine claimed General Motors had approved development of a Cadillac sedan designed to tackle the Mercedes S-Class. The report said testing of a new V12 engine for the car was "well underway" by Holden in Australia. GM product planner Bob Lutz and Holden's engineering boss have both flatly denied the report.

"It’s definitely not happening," executive director of engineering Tony Hyde told Australia's GoAuto. The AutoWeek report claimed GM vice chairman Bob Lutz stated in an interview that development had already begun at Holden for a 7.2-liter V12 made from two 3.6-liter V6s joined at the crankshaft.

"We are definitely not doing it," Hyde said. “It might be possible to join two V6s, but we are not doing it. None exist in our part of the world and we are certainly not testing anything like that at Lang Lang."

"We are not working on any Cadillacs," he continued. "Nothing. We’re full-up in terms of resources with Camaro and our own cars. The G8 is a challenge from a timing point of view."

Lutz denies

In an email response to a member of the GMInsideNews chat forums, Lutz also denied the report.

"Sadly, that article was about 90 percent pure invention," Lutz said. "We have kicked off no such program."

Baseless rumors?

It's not known how AutoWeek could make an error of this magnitude. The report was based around a purported interview with Lutz at the opening of a dealership in Europe. While Lutz may have commented on a super sedan project, it appears he didn't state anything near what the magazine claims.

The report also cited "sources" within Holden that were adamant about the Australian firm's involvement in the project.

In December, AutoWeek claimed Ford was developing sedan and station wagon versions of the popular Mustang for the 2011 model year. After the report was published, Ford was inundated with hate mail from Mustang fans. This prompted Ford to take the unusual step of issuing a press release denying the baseless rumors.

SHELBY GT500KR ‘KING OF THE ROAD’ RETURNS IN 2008

The GT500KR's wheels contain the words "Shelby" and in another location "GT500KR"

• Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the original Shelby Cobra GT500KR, Ford and Shelby collaborate on a new “King of the Road” Mustang with the 2008 Shelby GT500KR.

• Shelby GT500KR features an estimated 540-hp 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack, 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, short-throw shifter, and unique suspension tuning.

• Exterior design draws inspiration from the classic Shelby KR Mustangs and features unique carbon composite hood, wheels, and special 40th Anniversary badging and unique striping.

• Built at the Dearborn final assembly at Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas, the Shelby GT500KR arrives in spring 2008 as an exclusive run of only 1000 units.

(Dearborn, MI) TheGT500Source.com - Ford and Shelby Automobiles are at it again, this time in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR. To be unveiled at the 2007 New York Auto Show, the 2008 Shelby GT500KR—the most powerful version to date—will once again mark Mustang as “King of the Road.”

“I’m proud to once again be a part of an historical moment, bringing back the ‘King of the Road’ Mustang, and collaborating with Ford SVT and Ford Racing” said Carroll Shelby. “I’m committed to continuously upping the ante when it comes to performance, and it’s great to be doing it with Ford.”

“The return of the Shelby GT500KR further establishes Mustang as the true king of the pony car segment,” said Robert Parker, manager of Ford Car Brand. “With the unveiling of the new KR we are staying true to the promise we made our loyal Mustang fans to continue Mustang’s prowess by bringing new, exciting and more powerful Mustangs to market.”

Forty years ago, at the 1967 New York Auto Show, Ford introduced the most powerful Shelby Mustang ever. Like every Mustang that bore the name ‘Shelby,’ the GT500KR carries with it its own unique story.

1968 Shelby GT500KR.

The 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR was a mid-year introduction, based on the 1968 Shelby GT500. Ford added ‘Cobra’ to the Shelby’s moniker to help usher in the beginning of a new performance era at the company. The Cobra name referred to the new 428 Cobra Jet V-8 that was planted under the KR’s custom fiberglass hood. It was the engine that would once again vault the Mustang to the head of the pack.

Ford conservatively rated the 428 CJ at 335-horsepower, but in reality it made more than 400-horsepower and 440 pounds-feet of torque. The KR model was also equipped with a modified suspension and was offered both in fastback and convertible models. Ford dealers sold 1,570 GT500KR models in 1968, 1053 fastbacks and 517 convertibles.

While the name “King of the Road” may have been the perfect fit for the world’s most powerful Mustang, it also provided Shelby the chance to steal the thunder from cross-town rival General Motors. As the legend goes, Shelby learned that was planning to introduce a high-performance model and call it “King of the Road.”

Since he had always wanted to use the name, and as one to never miss an opportunity, Shelby set his organization in gear, registering the name and designing new badging for
the Cobra Jet-powered Mustang, christening it the GT500KR, and bringing Ford’s “King of the Road” to market before GM ever got a chance to apply the name to their product.

Thoroughbred Pedigree
Just like its 1968 namesake, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR builds on the strong foundation of the current Shelby GT500, packing 40 more horses under its custom-designed carbon fiber hood and crowning it the most powerful production Ford Mustang ever produced.

The modern Shelby Mustang line-up started with the 2007 Shelby GT500 coupe and convertible. With the recent launch of the 2007 Shelby GT, the 2008 Shelby GT500KR becomes the third production high-performance Mustang brought to market through the relationship of Shelby Automobiles and Ford. Ford and Shelby Automobiles also partnered up with Hertz to produce a special limited run of 500 Shelby GT-H “rent-a-racer” Mustangs available only for rent.

The 2007 Shelby GT500 has been the most successful vehicle program in the 14-year history of Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and that success has opened the door for more performance collaborations with Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing. Working together, these three performance powerhouses are driving Mustang momentum on the street and on the racetrack. Dealers cannot keep the cars on their lots, customers are clamoring for more, and racers are bringing home championships.

Shelby Mustangs have already achieved some impressive highlights showcasing an enthusiast demand that is unmatched in the business:
• The first 2007 Shelby GT500 available to the public sold for $600,000 dollars at the 2006 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, AZ benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation.
• 2007 Shelby GT VIN#1 also went for $600,000 at charity auction, this time at the 2007 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction (and the winning bidder also took the opportunity to purchase VIN#2 at MSRP).
• Shelby GT-H coupes auctioned off to Ford dealers after completion of Hertz rental duty consistently average $50,000, with high auction bids of $90,000.

The 2008 Shelby GT500KR will be produced in an exclusive run of 1000 units. It will be built alongside all Mustang models at the Auto Alliance International assembly plant in Flatrock, MI, and then shipped to Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas, NV. There, the Shelby team will transform each car into a certified Shelby GT500KR. The 2008 model will begin arriving in Ford dealers in the spring of 2008.

Crowning the New “King of the Road”
Doug Gaffka, Ford SVT chief designer, and his team worked closely with Carroll Shelby and the Shelby team to make certain the new KR was crafted in the spirit of the original Shelby muscle car.

“This was a great effort between Ford and Shelby Automobiles,” said Gaffka, “The Shelby team and I were in constant contact melding Carroll’s classic design cues with some modern concepts and ideas and finessing them into the design of the new KR.”

Gary Davis Vice President of Production for Shelby Automobiles was key to defining the look of the custom designed carbon composite hood for the GT500KR. His knowledge of the original GT500KR helped sculpt a modern interpretation of the original’s bulging hood scoop, a visual indication of the extra horsepower packed beneath it. The hood is secured by a pair of stainless steel, twist-down hood pins. The composite front valance houses a pair of chrome-trimmed, functional brake ducts to cool the large 14-inch, vented Brembo front brakes.

Side stripes are true to the original KR right down to the font used for the ‘GT500KR’ lettering, while the classic LeMans-style striping that races down the center of the car have been deleted between the leading forward edge of the hood scoops and the front of the hood, accenting the scoops and giving the KR its distinctive face.

“That was Shelby’s idea,” said Gaffka. “It’s a special touch that adds some down-the-road differentiation. There will be no doubt that it’s a ‘King of the Road’ Mustang that’s filling up your rearview mirrors.”

The show car wears exclusive, Shelby-designed 20-inch, forged, polished aluminum wheels with special custom center caps, mounted on Pirelli rubber. Production models will receive with an 18-inch version of the design.

Each KR model is identified by special 40th Anniversary KR badges on the fenders and grille, distinctive body colored mirror caps and Shelby lettering stretching across the front of the hood and along the rear portion of the deck lid. A special Shelby VIN tag is affixed to each vehicle, mounted in the engine compartment.

The all-leather interior features Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests and an official Shelby CSM 40th Anniversary GT500KR dash plate mounted at the top of the center stack.

The KR’s 5.4-liter V-8 Gets the Royal Treatment
Just like its namesake, the 2008 ‘King of the Road’ packs a walloping dose of Ford performance power under its massive composite hood scoop. The Ford SVT-engineered 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 is treated to a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts horsepower to an estimated 540 and torque to 510 ft.-lbs., thanks to revised ignition and throttle calibration and a cold air intake system that replaces the stock unit.

Calibration modifications include advancing the ignition timing as well as re-mapping of the electronic throttle settings to provide quicker throttle response for better off-line and mid-range acceleration. Increased throttle response will be met with a sharper roar from the Ford Racing-inspired exhaust system.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, upgraded from the standard GT500’s 3.31:1. Gear selection is courtesy of an all-new Ford Racing short-throw shifter making its debut on the KR. Topped with a white ball, the new shifter is 25 percent shorter than the unit on the GT500 providing for crisper, sharper shifts.

Ford SVT, Ford Racing and Team Shelby worked together to develop the KR’s suspension tuning. Based on initial work by Ford Racing and the team at Shelby, often at Shelby’s own facility on the grounds of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ford SVT chassis engineers will apply fine tuning techniques to prepare it for the streets.

“The production Shelby GT500 was maximized to deliver the perfect balance between ride and handling,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief nameplate engineer, Ford SVT. “In that same ride versus handling continuum, the KR will lean heavier towards all-out handling while still making it drivable on the street.”

Chassis engineers worked closely with the engine department in a holistic approach to the development of the KR, tuning the suspension to best optimize the engine enhancements.

“We aren’t fixing our attention on one or two attributes, but working on the vehicle as a whole,” concluded Gary Patterson of Shelby Automobiles. “The throttle response, power delivery, exhaust note, and handling should all gel together to deliver a total driving experience.”

The KR will feature unique spring rates, dampers, stabilizer bars, and strut tower brace, all designed specifically for the KR, to deliver the precision handling package.

Mustang Momentum Cannot be Stopped
Unwilling to wait for the impending pony car war to heat up, Ford is extending Mustang’s leadership position by feeding the enthusiast demand for more models, features, performance parts, and special editions. Ford has committed to at least one new Mustang ‘feature’ vehicle per year. For 2007, it is the Shelby GT, and for 2008, there will be at least two including the Shelby GT500KR and the previously announced Mustang Bullitt.
Ford’s ‘Steed for Every Need’ strategy currently offers four horsepower options for Mustang, with pricing from $19,995 for a 240-hp V-6 Mustang coupe to $46,500 for a 500-hp Shelby GT500 convertible.

Ford has also introduced several special packages on Mustang further increasing its unique offerings, including the Pony Package and the California Special.
In addition, Ford Racing offers a complete catalog of performance parts for Mustang fans, from custom wheels and exhausts to the complete, turn-key Ford Racing Mustang FR500C race car.

As a result, Ford offers Mustang enthusiasts the ability to buy, modify and drive the steed that perfectly fits their need.

WSJ- Porsche Raises Stake in VW, Forcing a Takeover Offer

Porsche Raises Stake in VW, Forcing a Takeover Offer

Published: March 25, 2007

BERLIN, March 24 — The German sports-car maker Porsche said Saturday that it would make a takeover bid for Volkswagen, a symbolically audacious but largely legal step in its growing control over VW, Europe’s largest carmaker and the inventor of the once-ubiquitous Beetle.

Porsche plans to lift its stake in Volkswagen to 31 percent from 27.3 percent. Under German law, it is required to make an offer for the entire company once it owns more than 30 percent of the shares.

The offer of 100.92 euros ($134.40) a share is the minimum amount Porsche can legally offer other shareholders and is well below Volkswagen’s most recent closing price of 117.70 euros. A Porsche spokesman said it was not seeking to acquire a majority stake in Volkswagen any time soon.

“We expect very few, if any, shareholders to sell us their shares at this price,” the spokesman, Michael Baumann, said. “This gives us the freedom to move further without taking other special steps.”

The move confirms, however, that Porsche is determined to tighten its grip on Volkswagen, with which it has deep historical links. The two companies cooperate in manufacturing sport utility vehicles, and two of Porsche’s most senior executives serve on Volkswagen’s board.

In a statement, Volkswagen’s chief executive, Martin Winterkorn, said he welcomed Porsche’s increased stake.

Analysts said Porsche was forced to cross this threshold sooner than it might have wished because of the recent rally in Volkswagen’s share price. Many analysts had expected it to wait until a European court issued a ruling on a German law that protects Volkswagen from hostile takeover bids.

The court is expected to strike down the law, which places a cap on the voting rights of shareholders at 20 percent, regardless of how many shares they own. If it does not, Porsche could find itself holding a large stake in Volkswagen without commensurate voting power.

“It’s clearly a high-risk approach, because Porsche doesn’t know exactly what is going to happen at the court,” said Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, the director of the Center for Automotive Research in Gelsenkirchen.

Shares of Volkswagen have risen 37 percent this year, largely on speculation about Porsche’s intentions.

Porsche first acquired shares in Volkswagen in September 2005, saying it wanted to protect the independence of its partner. It has steadily increased its stake, occasionally ruffling Volkswagen’s other major shareholder, the state of Lower Saxony, which owns 20.5 percent.

The links between the two companies are longstanding, complex and personal. Ferdinand Porsche, the patriarch of the Porsche family, designed the Volkswagen Beetle at the behest of Hitler.

The chairman of Volkswagen’s supervisory board, Ferdinand K. Piëch, is a member of the Porsche family, which still controls the sports-car company. He was once chief executive of Volkswagen, and continues to exert influence over its day-to-day affairs.

Analysts regard Porsche’s growing stake in Volkswagen as a way for Mr. Piëch, an automotive engineer and billionaire industrialist, to reassemble the pieces of his grandfather’s empire.

If all of Volkswagen’s shareholders were to accept Porsche’s offer, Mr. Baumann said, the deal would be valued at about 35 billion euros ($46.6 billion). Porsche has lined up financing for that, though he made it clear that the carmaker does not intend to raise the offer beyond the current discounted level.

Porsche’s investment in Volkswagen has already shaken up the larger company. Last fall, Volkswagen dismissed its chief executive, Bernd Pischetsrieder, and replaced him with Mr. Winterkorn, a protégé of Mr. Piëch, who ran the company’s luxury car division, Audi.

Soon afterward, Volkswagen’s No. 2 executive, Wolfgang Bernhard, resigned. Mr. Bernhard, a former chief operating officer at Chrysler, had pushed a stringent cost-cutting program.

Since then, analysts say, Volkswagen has shifted its emphasis to high-quality engineering and design. These are hallmarks of Porsche, and of Mr. Piëch, when he was chief executive of VW.

“In the long-term, we’ll have to see how competitive Volkswagen will be in the market,” Mr. Dudenhöffer said. “The risk is Piëch wants to do everything. He wants to buy control, and he’s reversing Volkswagen’s strategy.”

Testing THe Waters- Porsche Underbids Offer For VW

Testing The Waters: Porsche Underbids On VW, All Your German Automakers Are Belong to Ferdinand Piech?

Piech.jpgOk, at the moment Porsche isn't buying Volkswagen. I know there's all this talk everywhere on the Bruce-tastic Teutonic knights taking a larger stake in the automaker representing Deutschland, but an outright purchase is just not happening -- yet. How do we know? Here's why -- the shares of V-Dub are currently trading at around 117 Euros. The offer made by VW is 100.92 Euros, well under the market price and the lowest legal amount the Porsche boys can offer. See, it's a pro forma offer, being made because they're legally required to make an offer in Germany any time a company owns more than 30% of another one. Porsche even says as much. Michael Baumann, a company spokesperson said earlier this week to the NYT,

"we expect very few, if any, shareholders to sell us their shares at this price...this gives us the freedom to move further without taking other special steps."
What this does mean is that Porsche wants tighter control on the Beetle-maker -- and that the...

...current moves are due to the rising share price of VW, as opposed to a desire to move forward at this Bruce moment in time. So, although Bloomberg News can make this claim that VW is only worth €35.8 billion, we all know that's just not the truth. Either way, we're starting to believe at some point in the future -- all your German automakers are belong to Piëch.

Historic Race Car Fails To Sell

'World's most valuable car' fails to sell

Following postponement to research its background, Hitler-era German race car finds no buyer.

By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNNMoney.com staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- After a sale was postponed to answer questions about the car's racing history, an ultra-rare 1939 German racing car expected to fetch the highest price on record for any automobile did not find a buyer at an auction.

The results of the investigation revealed that the car did not have the exact history that was originally believed, but that was not expected to substantially alter its value, Rupert Banner, head of Christie's motor cars department, told CNNMoney.com before the sealed-bid auction.

The car, an Auto Union-Grand Prix V12, is one of five remaining "Auto Union D-Types." Its value had been estimated at more than $12 million.

The sealed-bid auction was completed March 4. A Christie's spokeswoman declined to comment on the number of bids received or the amount of the highest bid.

Christie's plans to auction the car at a later time, the company said, but a date for that has not been set.

The car was originally scheduled to be sold in Paris on Feb. 17. That sale was cancelled Feb. 9 when Christie's and Audi Tradition announced that further investigation was needed to confirm the car's racing history.

Audi Tradition is a branch of Audi that researches the brand's history and heritage. In the 1930s, Audi was one of four brands that made up Germany's Auto Union car company.

Later, after the firm was reconstituted in West Germany following World War II, the company was named Audi but retained the four-ring emblem that symbolized the combination of four companies.

In 1933, after becoming chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler offered 500,000 reichmarks for a company to design a race car to show off the nation's technological prowess. (At the time, 500,000 reichmarks was equal to about $150,000, or $2.3 million in modern terms, according to the Economic History Services Web site of Miami University of Ohio.)

Originally, Mercedes-Benz got the nod. But Ferdinand Porsche, then an engineer working with Auto Union, was able to secure some of that financing to build a revolutionary car he had designed. That basic design was modified over the next few years to become the 1939 Auto Union D-Type, the last of the line.

The D-type had a number of features that were extremely advanced for its day, including an engine mounted behind the driver and four-wheel independent suspension. Its twin-supercharged 3-liter V12 engine can produce 485 horsepower, giving the car a top speed of 185 miles per hour.

In many ways, the D-type offered a glimpse into what would become the future of racing. It's fundamentally very similar to Formula 1 and Indy race cars of today.

"It's the same as a modern day race car, just without fins," Rupert Banner, head of Christie's motor cars department, said in an interview with CNNMoney.com in January.

One thing it doesn't have, of course, is modern safety technology. Race cars in those days didn't even have seatbelts. It was seen as preferable to be thrown from the car in a crash. One safety advance the D-type did have was a removable steering wheel, allowing the driver to be more easily removed in case of a fire.

D-type cars won several Grand Prix races throughout Europe. This car was originally believed to be the one that won a Grand Prix race in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, the last race held in Europe until after the war. In fact, it was not.

The car did race on the famed Nurburgring track in 1939, the investigation revealed, finishing in 5th place. It also finished 6th at the 1939 French Grand Prix, a race in which two other D-types finished 1st and 2nd.

The car was one of 18 that were hidden in a mineshaft in eastern Germany during the war. They were discovered by invading Russian troops at the war's end. A number of the cars were subsequently lost or destroyed, according to Christie's.

It was taken to Russia after the war, where it was disassembled to study its technology.

The car was rediscovered in Ukraine in the late 1980s. It was still in pieces but was otherwise undamaged. Another car discovered nearby had had its chassis sawed in half, Banner said.

The current record for a car sold at auction, according to Christie's, is £5.5 million, or almost $11 million. That was paid for a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Sports Coupe sold by Christie's in 1987.

Ferdinand Porsche also designed another car for Hitler, but for a very different purpose. That car, inspired by the success of the inexpensive Ford Model T in the United States, ultimately became known as the Volkswagen Beetle. It also had a rear-mounted engine, as do today's Porsche sports cars.

Porsche takes $46.67 billion loan for Volkswagen bid

Porsche takes $46.67 billion loan for Volkswagen bid

Automotive News / March 29, 2007 - 11:00 am

LONDON (Reuters) -- Porsche is raising a $46.67 billion (35 billion euros) syndicated loan to finance its takeover bid for Volkswagen, according to the arranging banks.

Porsche has appointed ABN AMRO, Barclays Capital, Merrill Lynch, UBS and Commerzbank as mandated lead arrangers on the credit.

Porsche's takeover bid was triggered after it increased its shareholding in Volkswagen ordinary shares to 30.94 percent -- over the 30 percent threshold that prompts a full takeover bid under German law.

The jumbo loan will finance Porsche's mandatory public tender offer for the remaining outstanding ordinary and preferred shares, the banks said.

Porsche's loan has four tranches -- a 364-day line, a 364-day line with a term-out option, a three-year tranche and a three-year tranche with a two-year term out option.

The loan will be refinanced through a variety of sources including but not limited to capital-markets issues. A wider syndication will be launched in April.

In the context of the wider bid, Porsche has to submit documentation to the German regulator within four weeks from the start of this week, banking sources said, which has to be reviewed and approved by the regulator before the offer is posted.

The Bachelor Meets Bugatti

L.A.'s nightlife impresario takes delivery of the most exclusive production car in the world - and invites Fortune's Sue Callaway to help break it in.

(Fortune Magazine) -- This is about superlatives. A car, the Bugatti Veyron, that is unlike any other production car on the planet. And an entrepreneur, Sam Nazarian, CEO of SBE Entertainment, who is out to transform nightlife as we know it.

First things first: the wheels. In a risky corporate move, the VW Group revived the Bugatti marque in 1998 and started down the road to building the ultimate production car - in looks, in technical refinement, in exclusivity. Founder Ettore Bugatti, who died in 1947, became legendary for crafting amazingly advanced high-performance cars that behaved well on the street and were nothing short of art on wheels. His motto: "Nothing is too expensive, nothing is too beautiful."

To date, VW's Bugatti has taken 135 orders, and delivered 52 of the 300 Veyrons that will be made. And true to Ettore's vision, the two-seater makes good on all promises, from bespoke componentry to highest-caliber craftsmanship. And cost: $1.4 million.

I wanted to know who buys such a thing and what it's like to own one. So I hitched a ride with Nazarian, who just took delivery of a gorgeous red and black version. If you don't spend time on the Left Coast, you may not have heard of Nazarian - yet. A son of Qualcomm co-founder Younes Nazarian, Sam is 31, ambitious, and on a tear. He's building a network of high-end restaurants, clubs, real estate developments and hotels designed by Philippe Starck.

He also has a movie production company; his latest project, "Mr. Brooks," starring Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, and William Hurt, is due out in June. And he's doing it all with Bugatti speed. (To put that into perspective, the car goes zero to 62 in 2.5 seconds, faster than many current Formula One cars.)

"In terms of hotels, I want to build the Four Seasons of our generation - a chic, tasteful experience," he explained. "And I want your room key to give you VIP access to our clubs and restaurants."

Nazarian and I took a Saturday-night tour of his white-hot spots. As we carefully climbed into the low-slung Veyron, he laughed. "It's like high heels - putting them on is tough, but you look great once you're in - or so I've heard."

I was engrossed in admiring the machine-turned center console surround, the yards of creamy Austrian leather, the START button calling my name. Alas, Nazarian drove first.

First stop: his restaurant Katsuya (think Nobu crossed with Philippe Starck, who crafted the swish interior). We sampled the delectable fare and toured backstage, where Nazarian demonstrated the fingerprint-access security system and proprietary software that will link all his properties. "We'll be able to have your brand of vodka waiting in your room and your favorite appetizer on the table when you travel here," he explains.

Back outside, it was my turn to experience the driver's seat. As I opened the door, I looked longingly at the second ignition tucked alongside the seat track. It is with a second key engaged that the Veyron can achieve its 253-mph top speed (without it, speed is "limited" to 233 mph). The crowd swooned as I launched us into the night, all 16 cylinders lighting up behind us in a whoosh of jetlike power.

Finally, with a clear block in front of me, I laid the pedal down - and slapped my head into the seat back as we bulleted forward. It felt eternal, that G-force-drenched speed blur, but after about three seconds I let up and checked the speedo: 73 mph. Horsepower used: 449 (so said the very trick horsepower gauge) - only half her potential.

The Veyron's insane power (1,001 hp and 922 foot-pounds of torque) needs a lot of help to actually get all that oomph to the ground. Hence the weighty components (6,000 pounds' worth), all-wheel drive, four turbochargers, and silky-smooth seven-gear DSG gearbox. Yet the car feels lithe; it begs you with its ease to push its limits. Believe me, you couldn't see those limits with binoculars, no matter how good a driver you are.

Next stop, the Abbey, a club so popular that even on this rainy night more than 100 people were lined up, waiting to gain entry. After a quick tour, we headed to Area, L.A.'s hippest club of the moment. Gaggles of Paris Hilton wannabes stood outside, unable - despite their lack of clothing - to get past the bouncer.

Last stop: Hyde, a lounge so exclusive that a Web site posts which celebrities don't get in. The copper-lined boîte was teeming with TV types and scions; Nazarian and I ate a signature kobe burger as we talked.

I asked him why he wanted the Bugatti, since he's owned every other modern supercar ever made. "This car is about dedication to perfection, precisely what I want to achieve with my businesses." He sends Ivanka Trump a bottle of Cristal before we head back out to our cherry ride - and one last heavenly three-second blast.

Is that exhilaration worth $1.4 million? For most people, probably not. But I can tell you, having driven just about everything, I cannot imagine finding such a sensation anywhere else.

And so it was with more than a bit of wistfulness that I walked away from the Veyron at the end of the evening. And in a wonderfully Freudian move, I forgot to return the second key. When Nazarian politely asked me later how he might get it back, I came up with the perfect solution: Rent a track. Then I'll have to be there to witness all 1,001 horses at full gallop.

Lexus IS-F In The Works

Enter the rumormill: Lexus IS-F Evo in the works?

In an attempt to steal another page out of BMW's sport sedan playbook, rumors have surfaced that Lexus is in the process of developing a lightweight version of the IS-F, in the same vein as the M3 CSL. Internally dubbed the IS-F Evo, this limited edition sedan will benefit from an expensive diet, including lots of fiber (the carbon kind) and a bare-bones interior.

The reduced weight, combined with the 400 HP V8, is expected to drop the 0-60 time to below five seconds and on to a top speed of 155 MPH. Naturally, there's no word on pricing, but according to AutoExpress, it should arrive at dealers sometime in 2009.

V10 Audi R8 Spotted

Audi R8: V10 spy shots?

Audi R8
Are these the first spy shots of the long-rumored Audi R8 V10? We hope so.
The HH on the license plates and preproduction status of the R8 suggest this is a car owned by quattro GmbH. Note also some details pointed out by Nightranger. The side blade intake is rounded out for greater airflow to the motor. Also, a new sideskirt design on this particular R8 is similar in design to the skirts on the S5.

Audi RS6 Spotted At The Nurburgring!

Spied!!! Audi RS6 Testing At Nürburgring

To go up against Mercedes E63 AMG and BMWs M5, Audi is planning to offer the hot RS6. Priddy’s ninjas caught it here, at the Nrburgring, while it was undergoing some late prototype testing this week.

The larger air intakes in the front bumper and the wider fenders and diffuser at the rear, are the key clues as to the true identity of this Audi. And while the S models have four round exhaust pipes, the RS models will receive oval pipes as their distinguishing feature.

We have heard that the rumors about a twin turbo V10 are false, and that the RS6 will instead be powered by a blown V8 producing over 600hp. Could Audi finally be joining the proverbial German horsepower pissing contest? We can only hope!

The RS6 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September

Vidoe: Porsche Panamera... this is one butt ugly car!

VIDEO: Porsche Panamera goes north to Sweden

If you want to get spy shots of vehicles that will soon be showing up in European dealerships, the place to be every year from December to March is the area near the Arctic Circle in Sweden. One person of apparently hardy stock captured a pair of Porsche Panamera prototypes heading out to a frozen lake for some more testing. We've all seen stills of the Panamera on the Nordschliefe, but now you can see (and hear) the car in full motion video.

Porsche Shooting For Bugatti's Top Speed Record

9ff Looks to Break Bugatti Veyron's Record

porsche_9ff_gt9.jpg

Supercar company SSC isn't the only contender for the Bugatti Veyron's speed throne. German Porsche tuner 9ff has spent the past two years working up a 911 it hopes will hit 254 mph, 1 mph faster than the Alsatian Bug. The GT9 is powered by a twin-turbo Porsche flat six displacing 4.2 liters and producing 910-950 hp horsepower. Whether or not the GT9 does unseat the Bugatti at the Nardo test track later this year, you can still get one for the considerable sum of 476,000 EUR. Of course, you might want to wait; that level of cash outlay will go down better if the GT9 isn't merely the second fastest in the world.

Lambo Earns First Win In FIA GT

Lamborghini earns first motorsports win in FIA GT

While its sister ship struggled a bit, the #7 All-Inkl Racing Lamborghini Murcièlago R-GT ran strong all race, and managed to grab Lamborghini's first international racing trophy in its maiden outing. Drivers Christophe Bouchut and Stefan Mücke held off a pair of hard-charging Z06 Corvettes at Zhuhai International Circuit, with all three finishing within four seconds of each other.

The race not only marked the debut of the R-GT, but also of the FIA's new GT race format. For the 2007 season, GT races follow a new two-hour format that appears to have given organizers what they had hoped for – some really close racing. A late safety car deployment meant that pit strategy ended up being pretty important in this one, but that shouldn't take anything away from Lamborghini's impressive debut. After the final restart they rattled off a string of fastest laps to stay ahead for good. Kudos to Lambo. Check out the cool gallery available at Supercars.net by following the links.

Another Enzo Bites The Dust On Video...

VIDEO: Comedian/Actor Eddie Griffin takes out another Enzo

Another Enzo has met its unfortunate end, this time at the hands of actor Eddie Griffin. It seems that the star of several Oscar-worthy performances in Deuce Bigalow, Norbit and the unforgettable House Party 3, was practicing for a charity event to promote his new flick Redline, when he understeered Enzo's namesake into a Jersey barrier at speed.

A video of the crash is available here, but be forewarned, you'll have to explain your tears and howls to your housemates.

Dumbest Sales Manager On Earth...

Porsche dealer - "I got it wrong with the buy one get one free card". Print E-mail
Written by Jenny Shu
Friday, 23 February 2007
Glen Fergusson - Sales and Marketing manager for a brand new Californian Porsche dealer. Has lost his job and faces possible legal proceedings as the company strives to reclaim the costs of the 18 Porches given away free under Glen's Opening day "buy one get one free promotion" "I admit I didn't really do the numbers properly on this one" said Glen who told reporters that he had "seen the concept work really well for coffee stores" and in terms of numbers you could argue that Glen's campaign worked. As the new Porsche dealer sold 18 Porches in the first hour of the store opening.

It took the head office a full hour to realise what was going on and subsequently shut the store.

Local man Bruce Stepper took out a second mortgage on his home after getting a promotional flyer in his mailbox. "I am ecstatic - I brought a shiny red Porsche today, got another one free and I have sold just sold it on EBay, all up I end up getting a Porsche 911 for $5000"

Jane Cameron was arguably even more entrepreneurial. The local Janitor purchased a Porsche using the dealers "no deposit finance plan for low income earners", sold both cars, paid off the finance account and walked away with $120,000 profit. The finance plan was another one of Glen's initiatives that has now been cancelled.

A red faced Glen stated "I have never really been too good at Math and I was sure the whole time we were making money - I was initially blown away by the amount of cars we were selling in that first hour. I had seen the "buy one get one free card" work extremely well for the new coffee shop down the road and thought what a great idea I will try it here."

National spokesman for the dealership chain was quoted as saying "We are just glad that the idiot didn’t have time to run with his 'test drive 5 cars, get one free loyalty stamp card' campaign.

Aston To Produce New Flagship To Replace Vanquish

Ultimate Aston

Aston Martin's future is now X-rated, Auto Express can reveal

DBS
DBS would provide much of technology for new Aston flagship
Since the firm was taken over last week by a group of businessmen led by Prodrive chairman David Richards, boss Ulrich Bez has wasted no time in outlining his vision for the years ahead. As well as fast-tracking the development of models such as the DBS and four-door Rapide, Bez has hinted at a new flagship, codenamed DBX.

Aimed at the likes of the Mercedes McLaren SLR and Bugatti Veyron, the car would be a benchmark for pace and exclusivity for the British brand. While engineers and designers haven't revealed the performance targets they would set for the newcomer, it would sit on the firm's versatile vertical horizontal (VH) aluminium and composite chassis, and is likely to use a tuned version of the 6.0-litre V12 engine producing more than 700bhp.

That means a top speed in excess of 205mph and a 0-60mph time of less than 3.7 seconds. Inspired by the Aston Martin Zagato, launched back in 1986 primarily to reach 300km/h (186mph), the car will probably feature much of the technology which underpins the forthcoming DBS in a smaller, more potent package.

Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox because, while Aston has access to both fully automatic and semi-automatic units, it's thought a manual will offer greater driver appeal.

New owner Prodrive is likely to be involved in much of the suspension and engine tuning, as was the case with the V8-engined Vantage.

Although prices have not yet been discussed, it's expected that the newcomer would be the most expensive model Aston Martin has ever made, with a tag of at least £350,000.

Meanwhile, bosses at the company have also confirmed that they intend to increase sales volumes by speeding up production. Aston will employ more people, and is aiming to lift overall output to nearly 9,000 vehicles every year - up from its current volume of around 6,000 models.

Magazine Pioneer Robert Petersen Passes Away

All that I can say is that I am speechless. God rest his soul. He will leave an indellible legacy in the car world.

Brad
________________________________________________

Robert E. Petersen, Founder of Hot Rod, Motor Trend Magazines and Benefactor of the Petersen Automotive Museum Passes On at 80

Robert E. Petersen, an entrepreneur who
single-handedly created the largest special-interest publishing company in America, was instrumental in the evolution of the hot-rodding culture, and who, with his wife Margie, realized his dream of establishing an educational museum to pay tribute to the automobile, died on Friday, March 23, at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. after a short but valiant battle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was 80.

“Mr. Petersen helped create and feed the American obsession with the automobile, delivering gasoline-powered dreams to the mailboxes of millions,”
said Dick Messer, Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. “He understood the thrill that an average person could get from seeing and reading about horsepower as an art form.”

A native of Southern California, Mr. Petersen’s mother passed away when he was 10, leaving him with his Danish-immigrant father, who worked as a truck and equipment mechanic. As a young man he picked up his father’s skills, learning to weld, de-coke engines, and hone his fascination with cars.

After graduating from Barstow High School in the mid-1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, working at MGM studios as a messenger boy. Following service in the Army Air Corps toward the end of Word War II, Mr.
Petersen, now an independent publicist immersed in the burgeoning customized auto culture of California, was instrumental in creating the first hot-rod show at the Los Angeles Armory. To help establish the event, in January 1948 he launched Hot Rod Magazine, and hawked the magazine at local speedways for 25 cents a copy.
Motor Trend, a more upscale publication for production car enthusiasts, and dozens of other titles aimed at specialty automotive segments soon followed.

Mr. Petersen spent decades as Chairman of the Board of Petersen Publishing Company, which was at one time America’s leading publisher of special-interest consumer magazines and books before its sale to private investors in August 1996. Among its other diverse successful titles are Teen, Sport, Rod & Custom, and Guns & Ammo. He also headed a wide variety of other businesses including ammunition manufacturing, real estate development and aviation services that each reflected another passion he shared.

Firmly established as an American success story, Mr.
Petersen had one lasting vision: an educational museum to pay tribute to the automobile. On June 11, 1994, the lifelong dream of Robert E. Petersen was fulfilled with the opening of a 300,000-square-foot automotive museum named in his honor, made possible by his $30 million endowment.

Today the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles stands as the nation’s premiere automotive museum, serving thousands of visitors each year. Its mission remains to educate and excite generations of auto enthusiasts with the fascinating stories, vehicles and people that have influenced the American love affair with the automobile – a mission that has been a resounding success thanks to the generosity of its main benefactor.

In addition to his noted auto collection, Mr. Petersen also developed a keen interest in sport shooting. He served as Shooting Sports Commissioner for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he was responsible for building that venue from an old dairy farm within six months.

Mr. Petersen served as president and chairman of the board of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Hollywood, and was a member of the National Board of Directors for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of America. He was active in support of numerous children’s charities and also served as a member for the Los Angeles City Library Commission.

Both he and his wife have been major contributors to the Music Center of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Thalians social society, which raises money for the Mental Health Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His ongoing contributions to the community earned him numerous special citations from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Los Angeles City Council.

Mr. Petersen was to be honored with both the ‘Automotive Icon’ and ‘Visionary’ awards at the Petersen museum’s annual gala on May 10. The ceremony will now be held as a tribute to Mr. Petersen and his contributions to the institution and community.

“What made him so special was that he gave every ounce of his energy and abilities to his dreams. He was a quiet man who truly became an American icon,” the Petersen museum’s Messer said. “He made his living doing things he loved and he found success at every turn. The way he lived his life, always looking for ways to give back in return for the success he enjoyed, made you proud to count him as a friend. The museum is now his legacy.”

He is survived by his wife, Margie. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Petersen Automotive Museum or the charity of the person’s choice in his honor. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, March 29, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

SSC Misses The Top Speed Mark...

The Bugatti Veyron's status as the world's fastest production car is safe – for now. American sports car maker Shelby Supercars' attempt to send a twin-turbocharged version of its Ultimate Aero beyond 250mph is reported to have ended yesterday with a maximum recorded speed of 230mph, 23mph short of the Veyron's 253mph record.

SSC's attempt at the production car top speed record has been widely publicised, but few predicted that bad weather would get in the way. March 21 was due to be the day it closed a 12-mile stretch of Elko County's Highway 93 for the run, but snow forced them to regroup yesterday (March 22), when only test runs of two miles were deemed safe.

Veteran road racer Rick Doria was the man picked to drive the 1183bhp SSC. On his first test run, he reported wheelspin when shifting into 6th gear at 190mph, and went on to 221mph. On his second attempt, the Ultimate Aero hit a maximum 230mph within the two-mile test stretch, and was only using 50 per cent throttle in top gear at that speed. He's reported to have said that the car would comfortably break the Veyron's 253mph top speed given a longer run.

The word is that Shelby Supercars is going to make another attempt at the record within weeks; when it does, Autocar.co.uk will bring you news first.

BMW's Tailpipe Troubles

BMW"s Norbert Reithofer claims there "isn't a single luxury manufacturer" that could meet the 2010 emissions plan

BMW's Tailpipe Troubles
CEO cites emissions, trade issues at hand

By AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

AutoWeek | Published 03/19/07, 1:09 pm et
BMW faces difficult and profit-eroding issues, such as the weak dollar and yen, rising material prices and tougher European Union regulations on tailpipe emissions. Also, rivals Audi and Lexus have expansion plans that could hurt BMW sales.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer talked about how BMW will meet these challenges with Automobilwoche Editor Guido Reinking and Staff Reporter Pia Krix. Reithofer, 50, succeeded Helmut Panke as CEO in September.

BMW is still far below the European auto industry's goal of reducing CO2 emissions to 140 grams per kilometer driven by next year. How do you plan to close that gap?

We will achieve a clear reduction in these numbers by the target date. By then a third of our vehicle fleet will be under 140 grams per kilometer. But we have to reach this goal without undermining our core characteristic: driving dynamics.

The European Commission wants to reduce CO2 emissions from cars to 120 grams per kilometer by 2010. What would that mean?

There isn't a single luxury manufacturer who could achieve this limit for all vehicles. It would put the foundation of the German luxury automakers' existence into question.

You have other challenges, such as rising prices for raw materials and exchange-rate exposure. Analysts put these effects at more than a billion euros a year.

We were in a position to compensate for these figures. We did this through increases in productivity as well as through our growth in volume and model-mix improvements. This year, there is no question that we will increase our productivity further, by at least 5 percent.

How bad are exchange-rate effects?

It's not just the weak dollar that's an issue for us. The yen also has become an issue. We have been very successful in the Japanese market, so the yen exchange rate keeps playing a larger role for us.

How great is Lexus' competitive advantage in Europe by virtue of its production in Japan?

The competitive advantage is now significant. Since 2001, the yen has continued to weaken against the euro.

Your rival Audi has resolved to become the most successful luxury automaker in the world by 2015.

We have been in competition with Mercedes in sporty vehicles for the past 10 years. It has done both of us good; it has pushed both of us. I view the prospects of more competition from Audi in precisely the same way.

Do you see any danger that you could be overtaken by Audi?

If you look at the entire world - not just Europe, Asia and the U.S. - then you see that there are just two luxury manufacturers acting globally: Mercedes and BMW.
