Cadillac Needs A Flagship To Rival Audi's R8

Cadillac needs a flagship model at the top of its range, GM global engineering boss Jim Queen told Just-Auto. Such a vehicle would help boost the company's standing in the luxury arena.

"We need to provide Cadillac with a flagship that is not yet in the portfolio," Queen was quoted as saying.

"We showed the Cadillac Sixteen [concept] a few years ago and that signals that there is a need to continue to move that brand upstairs and one of the mechanisms for doing that is a flagship vehicle not in the stable right now."

Conflicting reports

GM product czar Bob Lutz recently shot down rumors about plans for a V12 sedan based on the Sixteen coupe concept. A report by AutoWeek claimed Holden was already developing an engine and chassis for the car, but Lutz said the report was mostly fiction.

"Sadly, that article was about 90 percent pure invention," Lutz said. "We have kicked off no such program."

As for the other 10 percent, Mr. Queen's statement seems to suggest some type of flagship is in the works. Whether it will compete with the Mercedes S-Class — as the AW report suggested — or rival the Audi R8, as others reports have hinted.
