NSX's Still Winning In Japan... Too Bad They Can't Compete In Le Mans Or ALMS

Japan Report: Honda NSX Leading The Way In Super GT Championship

In this year’s Autobacs Super GT Championship in Japan, the Nissan 350Zs look and sound terrific, and the Lexus SCs are exceptionally fast—but it’s still the Honda NSXs that are proving to be the cars to beat.

The works-supported NSXs, with their curious, longways-mounted V6s, ’70s style air scoops (not to mention 500+ brake horsepower), raced to a dominant 1-2 finish at this past weekend’s Okayama GT 300 km race.

In front of 35,000 spectators, ex-F1 pilot Ralph Firman and Japan’s Daisuke Ito controlled the race from the start, and only lost the lead briefly during a pit stop. In the opening round of the Super GT championship at Suzuka, the same drivers led the race all the way, only to have the car break on the last lap, so Sunday’s result was doubly sweet.

With 30-to-40 car grids, big crowds and spectacular dogfight racing, Super GT is a massive draw in Japan and the nation’s ‘J3,’ which is to say Toyota/Lexus, Nissan and Honda back it very strongly.
